Volunteerism with Felicia & Banks by Felicia Milligan
I am so appreciative of the opportunity to share a little bit about my volunteerism and social activism.
Over the years I have been involved on and off with a lot of different causes. But it has been with the birth of my 7-year-old son, Banks, that one of my greatest joys has been able to share volunteerism with him. We have marched, stuffed baskets for Thanksgiving dinners, collected and distributed hygiene products for low-income and homeless women; and recently thanks to Shift, we did litter and trash clean up in honor of MLK as a day of service to give back to the community. My son even had me order him his own little trash claw for next year!
With COVID, I think many people’s eyes have become open to the issues surrounding food scarcity and how so many people do not know where their next meal will come from. Besides being a necessity of life, so much celebration, comfort and happiness comes from food. Every culture has its own food or specialty dish at its core. School and community center closures in the pandemic have just compounded the need. Shift’s recent support of the North Texas Food Bank really inspired me to refocus on the issue of food scarcity and what I could specifically do to help.
Happily, I just completed the background check and training to become a Meals on Wheels volunteer and start my first shift the first week in May. My son will be joining in during the summer as we deliver meals and comfort packages to the elderly and homebound in our city.
Thank you again to Shift for continuing to offer volunteer opportunities and encourage community involvement.
