Fundamentals to Achieving New Year’s Resolutions by Charlotte Olsen
How many of us start the new year by setting “resolutions”? The new year resembles a fresh start and what we hope to accomplish: get fit, read more books, increase income, etc. The endless possibilities that we see the next 365 days always seem to have a rosy glow – or is it that we’re just wearing rose colored glasses?
Either way, let’s be realistic in how we can keep up with our goals to see them come to fruition:
1. Small steps are key.
Your resolution does not have to be some life-altering goal. Small accomplishments are just as worthy of a celebration, and they can ultimately lead to success on a larger scale. For example, if your goal is to get fit by going to the gym and you’re not currently a member – take it slow! Instead of jumping in with six workouts a week consider starting with maybe two or three to become more active. Then, once you’ve established a routine, increase that number until you eventually hit your goal.
2. Be patient.
This might go hand-in-hand with the “small steps” step, but it’s going to make you proud of what you have accomplished rather than what you haven’t (e.g. glass half full kind of thing). If we stick with the gym example, sure, it may be frustrating not fulfilling your six day a week target but the days you are going is an improvement from where you were.
3. Have an accountability partner.
Having someone who can walk through life with you makes the journey even more enjoyable. Find a friend who can help you reach your goals. This friend could be the person that will meet you at the gym, check in on you and see how your progressing in the goals you’ve set for yourself. This will not only help you stick to said goals but also give you someone to celebrate victories with!
4. Embrace each day.
Every day that you wake up is a chance to move a little closer to the goals you’ve set for yourself. They are each an opportunity to push yourself and have fun along the way. You should love the journey you’re on.
